Barcelona Chocolate Company is a project of Museu de la Xocolata de Barcelona and l’Escola de Pastisseria del Gremi de Barcelona. They make the chocolate in their Bean to Bar workshop, located in the old San Agustí convent, in el Born neighbourhood. The brand puts its focus in the origin: On the one hand, in the city where the project is born, Barcelona; on the other hand, the origin of the chocolate: the cacao.
In search for a graphic identity that is genuinely barcelonian and linked to the place where the project is born, we rediscovered a unique typeface that was used in the street signage of Barcelona during the 19th century.
Photographic archive of the marble plaques and the process of typeface digitalisation. The typography’s poles and vertical strokes are modulated with bean shaped protuberances that ressemble the decorative curves on street columns and balustrades.
We redrew the alphabet, creating a loyal version that preserves all the elements to its original character, and at the same time corrects and modulates its shapes. To achieve this, numerous marble plaques were photographed and digitalised to compile the maximum number of characters.
In this process, three versions arised. The first one, consisting of 2 modules (beans) of height, is a harmonized reproduction of the original version that we find in the plaques. We took advantage of the typeface’s modular structure and we created a second version that maintains the width and the original typeface’s features, enlarging the vertical proportion by adding 2 more beans to all their vertical poles. Finally, we achieved a third version when we break the modules in two, to create different chromatic combinations.

Barcelona Chocolate Company offers two product collections: The Origins collection is a selection of the best cacaos in the world. The initials of the country the cacao comes from become the distinctive element of the front of the pack and they are depicted with the bicolor version of the Fava typeface. The Premium Ingredients collection, pairs the best chocolate with selected ingredients. The illustration combined with the typeface brings character to the collection.
Direction of photography
The photography art direction works with the concepts of tension and origin, that arise from the relationship between chocolate and thinness that characterises the chocolate bar. The bars and the packagings are combined in equilibrium with chocolate blocks and other elements that create illusory compositions filled with color.
The origin bars are combined with blocks of pure cacao, referencing the origin of the product. The ingredients bars are combined with geometrical blocks of cacao and with elements that reference its ingredients, highlighting the flavour.
